E-HEALTH4SENIORS: Strengthening the eHealth literacy skills of older adults

Strengthening the eHealth literacy skills of older adults

The Need Behind the Project

Europe is experiencing a significant demographic shift, with a steadily growing ageing population. At the same time, healthcare systems across European countries are rapidly digitalising their services, introducing online appointment systems, telemedicine consultations, electronic prescriptions, digital patient portals and mobile health applications. While these developments increase efficiency and accessibility, they also create new challenges for older adults who may lack the digital skills, confidence or support needed to use such services effectively.

Many senior citizens face barriers such as limited digital literacy, fear of technology, concerns about privacy and data protection, and difficulty distinguishing reliable online health information from misinformation. As a result, they risk exclusion from essential healthcare services and reduced autonomy in managing their own health. This digital health divide not only affects individual well-being but also increases dependency on family members or caregivers and contributes to broader social inequality.

The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the digital transformation of healthcare, making remote consultations and online services a necessity rather than an option. However, this rapid shift highlighted the urgent need for targeted educational support tailored specifically to older learners. Generic digital skills training is often insufficient, as seniors require structured, practical and health-focused learning that addresses real-life scenarios they encounter.
